Today is Sunday… meaning it’s our favorite day to relax, reflect, and post our Giving Back feature of the week. This week we are SO EXCITED because our post coincides with the birthday of a young woman who has inspired us both in so many ways… today is Malala Yousafzai’s eighteenth birthday!!! *HAPPY BIRTHDAY MALALA!!!*
If you’ve been active on social media this past week, you may have noticed #BooksNotBullets trending. And today we are joining the movement by posting our photos to Instagram, and we encourage all of you to do the same! #BooksNotBullets is a movement to show world leaders why books and education should be more of a primary concern. According to www.malala.org, “If the whole world stopped spending money on the military for just 8 days, we could have the $39 billion still needed to provide 12 years of free, quality education to every child on the planet.” Reread that and take a moment to let it sink in. It takes only EIGHT days. That’s a week and one day! No matter your stance on higher education, the real fact of the matter is that you are reading this, meaning you had the chance to learn to read and you most likely had access to a school at some point in your lifetime. But think about the MILLIONS of kids in this world who WISH they had your opportunity.
It’s easy to fall into an “out of sight, out of mind” pattern and know there are problems in the world, and because you do not see them directly, you can choose to ignore them. But why should you? Go ahead and post a photo of yourself holding up a book. Inspire someone today! Take a few seconds and make ONE small difference on this beautiful Sunday by joining in the movement!
The exact instructions from www.malala.org say, “Post a photo of yourself holding up your favorite book and share why YOU choose #BooksNotBullets – and tell world leaders to fund the real weapon for change, education.” Easy, right? Can’t wait to see your pictures!
