This week we launched our first issue of 2023, our Innovation Issue, with designer @jinsolwoo as our cover star! Why innovation? As I mentioned in my Editor's Letter, innovation has allowed EnVi to bloom from a fan project and blossom into the media company we are today. We emphasize a collaborative work environment, encourage putting your wellbeing first, and focus on quality content over quantity and clickbaits. It’s not an easy road by any means, especially since we are primarily women of color in an industry that favors gatekeeping and exclusivity. But we use that as a strength to continue innovating, adding more seats to our table, and amplifying voices through an unbiased lens.

In addition to our exciting 20 page (!!!) cover feature, the issue includes exclusive interviews with rising Filipino boy group ALAMAT, visual artist Lan Florence Yee, and a discussion with Laurent François, Managing Partner of 180 LUXE about their award-winning Dior Addict campaign with BLACKPINK’s Jisoo. Other exciting highlights include innovations in fashion, a deep dive into the Black roots of country music, and an in-depth look on Korean survival shows.

Hello 2023… reflecting on 2022 going through my

Hello 2023… reflecting on 2022 going through my photo albums, highlights, and gratitude journal, there was one constant in my life: @envimediaco. We had two exclusive covers with @suranelenashin and @cravity_official, worked with Warner to host bicoastal events for @aespa_official, produced a number of events including our Sip & Shop in LA supporting AAPI brands and our K-pop brunch party in New York… our second year at the Head in the Clouds festival (and first for a handful of others globally!), working on set filming with talent, launching our creative agency @envicreative, launching EnVi FORMATION (for Black fans, by Black fans), a ton of our fashion week coverage going viral, and getting a number of mentions in overseas press too! We had more than 80 interviews and features with talent in 2022! 🤯

The latter half of the year was very difficult for me mental health wise… no one sees the challenges behind the scenes. On top of running day to day operations with my small team and working nonstop to secure partnerships, collaborations, and financial opportunities to grow this little business, there’s also the constant pushback as women of color to “prove” ourselves… and some miserable individuals who troll and threaten us online. 🙃 There were many sleepless, crying nights because nothing is more important to me than the safety and success of every single person on my extraordinary, talented team.

But now as I reflect on all we accomplished this year alone (our second year in existence!), I’m more certain than ever 2023 is going to be even bigger and better. We built this table with purpose and passion… and we’re somehow disrupting the industry in the best possible way, opening doors and opportunities for more people of color to get a seat at the table. 😘

So cheers to 2023 and all it has to offer! Remember to celebrate the small wins along the way, appreciate how far you’ve come, and continue to show up for yourself. You got this.
